Tour Summary

Central Tanzania

The annual migration of Wildebeest and Zebra between the Masai Mara in Kenya and Tanzania’s Serengeti Plains is one of the world’s greatest wildlife spectacles and this tour is timed to search for the migration at the southern end of the Serengeti where the vast herds concentrate in the early months of the year. Ndutu Safari Lodge has become firmly established as one of the most popular of all the lodges visited by Papyrus in East Africa and a feature of the tour is a seven night stay there to allow you to get deeply immersed in the southern Serengeti and all its wildlife.

The tour also visits beautiful Tarangire National Park and the incomparable Ngorongoro Crater, ensuring a wonderful selection of mammal and bird life encounters on your 15 day itinerary.

Itinerary

Day 1 : Depart from the UK for Kilimanjaro, transferring on arrival to Serena Mountain Village Lodge, Arusha.

Days : 2—4  Tarangire Safari Lodge

The early risers will no doubt be out in Mountain Village’s beautiful gardens to catch the first bird movements of the day before taking breakfast and departing for Tarangire National Park. Your journey takes you through Arusha and on excellent roads to the park which you will reach in time for lunch.

Your tented lodge occupies arguably one of the best locations in the park, giving wonderful panoramic views over the course of the Tarangire River and the gently rising land on either side which is dominated by some superb Baobab trees. Tarangire is renowned for the large herds of elephant which come to the Doum Palm lined river to drink on a daily basis but it is also home to many other mammal species including Giraffe, Eland, Reedbuck, Common Waterbuck and Steenbok. Lion and Leopard are also present although not so readily seen as in some other parks.

In addition to the game drive you will take in the afternoon on the day of arrival, there will be further game drives over the next two full days to enable you to become fully acquainted with all that Tarangire has to offer.

Days 5—6 : Ngorongoro Crater

After taking breakfast at Tarangire, you will depart for the relatively short journey to Ngorongoro, climbing the steep wall of the Rift Valley and skirting the eastern rim of the crater before arriving at the Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge for lunch.

In the afternoon you will take your first trip into the deep bowl of the Crater which is teeming with a vast array of wildlife. Several prides of lion inhabit the crater and they, along with the Cheetah and other hunters including Hyaenas and Jackals also to be found here have a steady supply of game with several species of antelope, Wildebeest and Zebra all in good numbers. On Day 6 you will have a second drive into the Crater, taking a picnic breakfast to maximise your time there and returning to the lodge to lunch. The afternoon offers the possibility for you to explore the Ngorongoro Highland area to the north of the Crater where you will no doubt encounter some different bird species.

Days 7—13 : Ndutu Safari Lodge

Another picnic breakfast will give you a final opportunity for a visit to the Crater en route to Ndutu safari lodge which lies on the southern border of the Serengeti. You will arrive at the lodge for lunch at the start of a seven night stay. The lodge is beautifully located standing back from the southern shore of Lake Ndutu which can just be glimpsed through the trees. There are no fences and game can (and on occasions does!) wander in front of the bungalows offering wonderful views. From Ndutu you will take game drives visiting a variety of habitats. Close to the lodge there are two lakes, Lake Ndutu and Lake Masek and further west there are extensive marsh areas where prides of lion are to be found along with plentiful game and a wide range of bird species. Further west again the landscape opens out to the vast expanse of the Serengeti, an apparently endless grass plain stretching to the horizon and home at this time of year to the migrating herds. Ndutu is ideally placed as a base from which to explore this quintessentially African landscape and a full week here will provide a host of wonderful memories.

Day 14 : Gibbs Farm

After a final breakfast at Ndutu you will say your farewells and head back east, passing the Crater en route to Gibbs Farm for lunch and an overnight stay. Gibbs was originally established as a coffee farm and still grows sufficient for the lodge’s own use along with superb vegetables which enhance the dinner table. During the afternoon there will be the opportunity to take a walk around the farm and this will give the opportunity for some additional species to be added to what by now is sure to be an impressive list.

Day 15 : Gibbs Farm and depart

A final relaxing morning at Gibbs will give you the opportunity to prepare for the journey home which begins after lunch with a transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport where you will board your flight home in the evening.

Day 16 : You will arrive back in the UK early in the morning.
