Tour Summary

Borneo

Borneo, an island that conjures images of darkness and mystery, has long nourished the imagination of naturalists and travellers alike. The State of Sabah has perhaps the best protected areas on the island. From the heights of Mount Kinabalu to pristine coral-fringed islands with vast tracts of lush forest in between, this diversity supports a tremendous array of endearing and intriguing species – there are mammals, lizards, snakes and frogs that glide, fish that ‘walk’ on mud, monkeys that dive and swim and plants that eat insects.

Best known are two extraordinary primates; the fabled Orang Utan literally translated as ‘Man of the Forest’ and the spectacular Proboscis Monkey. Add to these the magnificent Rhinoceros Hornbill, several species of Pitta – exquisite jewel-like forest-floor birds, a myriad of singing tree frogs and the giant Rafflesia, the world’s largest flower and some of this natural wealth becomes apparent.

Our tour visits premier wildlife locations including Kinabalu Park, Sepilok, Kinabatangan River and Danum Valley. All provide straightforward access and good standards of accommodation and in combination offer a window into the natural spendour of Borneo’s hidden secrets.

Itinerary

Day 1 : Flight to Kuala Lumpur

Depart from London early afternoon for Kuala Lumpur.

Day 2 : Onto Kota Kinabalu

After an early morning arrival in Kuala Lumpur, take an onward flight to Kota Kinabalu, arriving around midday. Afternoon spent relaxing. Evening meal at a restaurant in town.

Days 3, 4, and 5 : Kinabalu National Park

Transfer after breakfast to Poring Hot Springs at the southern end of Kinabalu Park, an excellent location for birds and mammals. A canopy walkway suspended 40 metres high offers excellent opportunities to observe wildlife in the canopy.

Day 6 : Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary and Kinabatangan River

An early morning transfer to Kota Kinabalu International Airport to catch a short domestic flight to Sandakan where, on arrival, we transfer directly to Sepilok Reserve for the morning feeding session. We will take an afternoon city tour of Sepilok.

Days 7, 8, 9 and 10 : Kinabatangan River

We transfer by road to Sukau and take an afternoon river cruise on the Kinabatangan. Three further full days give us ample opportunity to explore the area with early morning and afternoon boat trips each day. In addition there will be forest walks and, subject to weather conditions, nocturnal walks.

Days 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 : Danum Valley

An early morning excursion on the Menanggol River will be followed by a mid morning drive to the Gomantong Caves, where we will see bats and cave swiftlets, and on to the Danum Valley.

We will have a further four days to explore the area.

Day 16 : After spending the early morning in the Danum Valley, we will transfer by road to Lahad Datu airport from where we fly to Kota Kinabalu and on to Kuala Lumpur. We depart from Kuala Lumpur on our overnight flight to the UK.

Day 17 : Arrive back in the UK.
